6 Tips for Your First (Or Next) Yoga Class
Yoga classes can be extremely intimidating, especially for a first-timer. If you’re still not ready for your first or next yoga class, this article will give you tips to help you feel more prepared, comfortable, and confident in every pose.
1. Don’t take your class with a full stomach.
Doing yoga after a meal is a big no-no. It will only hinder your practice and will defeat your purpose of taking yoga. Yoga instructor Kristin McGee recommends eating at least one hour before practice. However, if you are starving, you can eat a banana 20 minutes before your yoga class.
2. Be an early bird.
Arriving early in your first yoga class is very important as there might be paperwork to fill out. In addition, arriving before everybody else is also a great idea since you’ll be able to choose the best location to set up your mat.
3. Prepare your props.
If you don’t have complete props for yoga, you can borrow some props available in your studio. If you’re not sure whether your studio offers free usage of props, then you might just to be sure and buy your own set of props. You don’t have to but a lot. Just make sure you have the basic equipment needed for your yoga class. After the class, ask your instructor about the necessary yoga props in his/her class and visit a yoga shop later.
4. Be ready for some chanting.
Most yoga classes involve chanting at the beginning or at the end of the class. You can either take part or not. Simply breathe, relax, and keep your mind open. If it’s your first time and you have no idea how to keep up, you can simply observe. If you want to try, you can always do so, but don’t push yourself too much.
5. Keep things loose.
One of the most important parts of a yoga class is the part where you release tension. Clenching your fingers or toes is a very common thing most first timers do during their first few classes. So, if you’re doing this, it’s only natural. However, you must be able to learn how to release stress and tension out of your body. By releasing what you are holding back, you’ll be able to make your poses more easily. Just keep things loose and you’ll have a more fun in your classes.
6. Control your breathing.
At the beginning of your classes, you might notice your breathing is shallow. You can tell whether or not your yoga class is effective for you if you’re able to normalize your breathing at the end of the class. As your mind wanders with every pose, control your breathing. Make deeper and more relaxed inhales and exhales.
